Man dies after being attacked by a shark in Australia

A swimmer died after being attacked by a shark on the Australian coast tour Byron Bay, New South Wales, the ABC News reported today.

The shark bit the man, 50, in the right leg.

According to police, a tourist took it out of the water and other swimmers tried in vain to revive him, but the man died in front of his wife.

Shortly after a shark attack in two to four feet long he was, say the media. The beaches in the area will be closed 24 hours.

Apparently, it would be a great white shark, a protected species whose capture is prohibited. So rescue teams tried to chase it away helicopters and jet skis, a police spokeswoman said.

"It was a killing bite, with much loss of blood," a doctor said. "Probably the victim is dead in the water".

The tourist who took him to the beach was dismayed. "It was really terrible. Sorry about the man and his family. Did everything I could to help."

The deceased, wearing a wetsuit, was about 20 meters from the beach when he was attacked. The man lived in Byron Bay.

According to the environmental organization Taronga Conservation Society in the last century shark attacks have killed 137 people.
