Fighting between Syrian forces and extremists in Golan Heights

Syrian troops exercised and Islamist rebels clashed again today in heavy fighting on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, near the border with Israel, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The troops of President Bashar al Assad attacked positions of the Islamist Al Nusra Front in the city of Qunaitra, the Observatory reported. At the moment there is no information on deaths or injuries.

The fighting is intensifying in the city of Quneitra, where Islamist insurgents last week became the sole border crossing between Syria and Israel.

The rebel camp in the area is dominated by Al Nusra Front, which captured last Thursday there 44 UN soldiers from Fiji.

At the moment there is no news on the status of Fiji soldiers, who were captured along with 72 Filipino troops. Some of the latter were released by Irish soldiers and the rest managed to reach safety after.

These soldiers are part of the UN Force Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which monitors the ceasefire agreement agreed between Syria and Israel in 1974, after the Yom Kippur War.
