Avalanche in Nicaragua 'buried' 20 artisanal miners

Government's warning about the danger of landslides on the hill "El Comal" in Nicaragua Northern Caribbean region not persuaded 22 artisanal miners to earn a living digging for gold in a mine located within the hill, in which produced a landslide ground Thursday morning, leaving 20 men buried. 

Authorities say two miners were able to leave after the avalanche and rescuers desperately working to assist others. 


The hill "El Comal" is located 4 kms. north of Bonanza, Nicaragua Municipality which forms part of the "Mining Triangle", a region of the country famous for its gold mines and has significant investments in companies from Canada and South America, including HEMCO company that manages several farms Bonanza and has provided equipment and trained to work in the rescue staff, along with members of the Army of Nicaragua, workers of the local mayor and mining the area where the avalanche occurred well known. 


Martha Lake Councilman FSLN in Bonanza, informed that the rescue began on the evening of Thursday, May hours after the collapse occurred. 

Rescuers were able to access one of the galleries of the mine, but stopped the search because another collapse made ​​access closed.
