Amid contentious campaigns, will lower the rate of breastfeeding mothers

The Ministry of Health of the Federal District reported that in the city of Mexico, the number of mothers who breastfeed their children in the first six months, fell 35% from the year 2006-2012.
As part of the commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, the local agency reported that, according to the National Survey of Health and Nutrition, breastfeeding under six months, in urban areas of Mexico, including Mexico City , decreased from 22.3% in 2006 to 14.4% in 2012, ie a reduction of about 35%.
In the same period, but in rural areas, the decline was 50%, local Sedesa reported.
"It's a situation that concerns because, according to the World Health Organization, breastfeeding is the ideal way for babies to grow and develop properly," said Deputy Secretary for Health Services and Supplies of Sedesa Services, Román Aviles Rosales.

He said the decline in breastfeeding to various factors, such as misinformation on the subject, or in such case, should the changing role of women.
"Before, women usually played at home, has now been incorporated into the core business. That makes him less time to devote to this part of breastfeeding, "said Rosales Avilés.
He said, therefore, the Federal Labor Law gives mothers an hour reduction in the working day, to spend time with breastfeeding. But he added, "this time is not enough. Hence the importance of milk feeders are installed within the workplace. "
Aviles Rosales recalled that last May, the Ministry of Health of Mexico City takes action to promote breastfeeding. In that regard, said that campaigns to inform the benefits of breastfeeding practice since the baby is born until two years will be created.
"We will strengthen the training of health personnel so they can show mothers breastfeeding properly and information activities from prenatal visits," said Undersecretary Roman Rosales.
In his speech, the Deputy Director of Newborn Care and Prevention of Disability Federal Ministry of Health, Fabiola López Oliva, said that the lines of action exerted by the local government, in addition to the national strategy to strengthen breastfeeding such as the creation of milk feeders and milk banks, which will benefit both children and mothers.
He said that these actions will be effective and help reduce neonatal mortality, one of the goals of international development.
From Saturday until August 7 will be held the World Breastfeeding Week under the slogan: Breastfeeding, a triumph for a lifetime!

Despite efforts to promote breastfeeding, the Ministry of Health of the Federal District has polemics on this topic.
Last May, the city government launched the first phase of the campaign breastfeeding, "No Le Des's Back, Dale Chest", which made the son of comedian Jorge Ortiz de Pinedo. The content root in images of actresses like Camila Sodi and Maribel Guardia, who with white cloth covering her breasts.
However, this campaign was rejected by feminist organizations, who rated it "classist, sexist and racist, because these women (actresses) have played a role as a sex symbol, and not women living in Mexico City" Lurdes said Barbosa, director of the Citizen Observatory for Gender Equity.
Days later, Secretary of Health of the Federal District, Armando Osuna Sanchez, met several women's associations to collectively perform a new breastfeeding campaign and new images were relaunched about it.
With it, organizations for women ordered to change the slogan and posters of actresses. In coordination with the Women's Institute of Ontario (InmujeresDF) and local Sedesa, oversaw the content of the new campaign, which would aim to breed respect, integrity, labor and social conditions of women.
Along with these projects, civil organization Eat Project launched last June, a counter advertising campaign under the slogan "Do not you turn your back, if you want to breastfeed," which was based on the campaign that the local government had released a month earlier: 15 women (not actresses) with bare belly and a blanket chest were shown.
On 22 July, the head of the local health department, Armando Osuna Sanchez presented the second stage of the breastfeeding campaign, called "Breast milk is health and nutrition. Find out more and decide. "
New campaign posters show mothers feeding their babies. "This campaign is the result of the respectful and constructive cooperation of the Government of Mexico City with social, civil and women's organizations, who enriched the content and graphic image," said Armando Osuna Sanchez.
