The specialist of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Jalisco, Wendy Ocaña De la Torre said that the increase of diarrhea during summer due to deficient hygiene and lack of care in feeding.
"In this season there is also more risk, in addition to beach area consume more seafood, for example, it is customary that many people eat ceviche prepared with lemon, but it is a food that breaks down very quickly," he said.
The director of the Family Medicine Unit (FMU) No 162 of the IMSS in Melaque, Jalisco reported that the month of June to date have increased 10 percent gastrointestinal infections in that area, primarily bacterial infectious diarrhea, referred to the season heat.
He explained that basically causes related to poor hygiene, especially in food preparation and handwashing.
He indicated that, on average, this unit serves Social Security daily to three patients with gastrointestinal diseases, the most affected are children under 5 and the elderly.
He stressed that the most serious complication can be reached severe dehydration, which can even endanger the patient's life.
Therefore, he said, preventive hydration is important to reduce the risks this season, even in areas with daily temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, as in the town of Melaque, Jalisco.
He explained that in these regions also humidity is recorded, which helps to produce greater amounts of sweat and thereby facilitate the loss of electrolytes, so the intake of two to three liters of water or fluid a day is recommended, while in the children aged five years should drink a liter and a half to two liters per day.
The food, especially seafood, must be well cooked and cleaned; addition, hand hygiene is critical, so you need to wash before eating and after using the toilet and if necessary several times a day.
In the presence of a diarrheal illness, the doctor said Social Security, it is best not to resort to self-medication, since the origin of the painting is unknown.
"When you self-medicate may mask the clinical picture and maybe if they take medication for pain or diarrhea were quiet a moment without thinking that this is something that requires an infectious management with antibiotics," he said.
If dehydration gastrointestinal diseases and patient management can be through antibiotics, if the cause is bacterial, further proceeding to hydration, depending on the severity, can be in the home or during hospitalization.
