WHO and Cuba call to increase efforts against Ebola

A call on governments to join a global effort to address the Ebola did today the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Margaret Chan, and the Cuban Health Minister Roberto Morales.

"If we are to go to war against Ebola, need resources to fight," said Chan in a statement, thanked the generosity of the Cuban government and health professionals to help contain the worst outbreak of hemorrhagic fever history. 

The Caribbean nation sent to West Africa to a brigade of 165 employees, of which 62 doctors and 103 nurses, with over 15 years of experience and already labored in dealing with natural disasters and epidemiological in several countries. 

Chan especially thanked the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and President Raul Castro, rapid response to support requested by the WHO and the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, to various countries. 

WHO has deployed some 170 specialists in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea Conakry, but estimates are still needed 500 to over 600 professionals. 

The issue was analyzed here this week during a work meeting, chaired by the Director General of WHO and the Cuban health minister, Roberto Morales. 

The minister believes that confronting hemorrhagic fever should be done in an integrated manner, under the leadership of WHO, so that may have a greater impact. 

Morales reiterated the call to governments and heads of Health to join this effort, at a time when Africa is in urgent need of international solidarity. 

The 2014 is the most complex Ebola epidemic is known to date, with four thousand registered 784 cases and more than two thousand 400 deaths, according to updated today by international agency data.
