Kerry says that Egypt is in the forefront of the fight against terrorism

The Egyptian regime, which for the past 13 months has executed a fierce crackdown on Islamist and secular opposition is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism. This was said on Saturday the United States Secretary of State John Kerry during his visit to Cairo, the last stop of his tour of the Middle East in search of support to the international coalition against the Islamic State.

"As a Muslim intellectual and cultural capital world, Egypt has a decisive role in public opposition to the ideology that spreads the Islamic State," said the head of American diplomacy in a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shukri.

To satisfy the Egyptian authorities, Kerry stressed that the contribution of the Arab country is especially relevant for their battle in the Sinai Peninsula against the jihadists, who have increased their deadly attacks cons security forces since the overthrow in July 2013 Islamist Mohamed Mursi. To support that effort, said Washington Democrat announced last month sending eight Apache attack helicopters.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed that the various militant groups based in the region share the same ideology so global action is needed to tackle the threat. Shukri has stated in recent days that Egypt will not take a leading role in the fight against IS (Islamic State, for its acronym in English) instead because it has to "focus on his own war" also veiled reference to the Muslim Brotherhood, declared "terrorist organization" without providing evidence of their connection with the attacks against the skepticism of the international community.
