In Liberia, the Ebola epidemic spreads unchecked

The Ebola virus spreads rapidly in Liberia, where several thousand new cases are expected in the next three weeks, said the World Health Organization (WHO). "The transmission of Ebola virus in Liberia is strong and the number of cases is increasing exponentially," WHO said.

The UN agency said that the motorcycle taxis and regular taxis "are an active source of potential HIV transmission" in Liberia, where conventional interventions "are not having the right impact." The epidemic killed 1,089 people in 1,871 cases reported in the country. The dead between Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone totaling 2,097 of a total of 3,944 cases. In Nigeria there were seven deaths in 18 cases. Scientists believe that the regions likely to harbor animals with the virus are more than feared, particularly in West Africa.
