26 million Colombians at risk of Chikungunya

About 26 million people are susceptible to chikungunya disease, produced by the same mosquito that causes dengue fever, according to the forecast of the Ministry of Health. 

Deputy Minister Fernando Gómez Ruiz said the Chikungunya is having explosive behavior because there are two countries that border Colombia with the disease, Panama and Venezuela, which have had a rapid increase in the reported cases. So far 27 countries are already affected. 



Ruiz Gómez said that "in a negative scenario about 700 thousand cases are possible for 15 epidemiological weeks. There are 888 municipalities below 1,200 meters above sea level where 26 million people live susceptible to the disease and that is the setting in which the vector that produces the virus moves ". He clarified that the epidemic can be controlled and who have the resources available to control the situation. "We have resources in the order of 6,400 million pesos for the emergency. The population is essential to help avoid the spread of vector breeding sites. If there are no mosquitoes for the virus so the message is clear: build a container water is a breeding ground potential, so it is necessary to throw it, clean it or cover it so that there's aegypti mosquito eggs can not hatch, transmitter of the disease, "he said. 

Among the areas of greatest risk for the virus are all cities that are located below 1,200 meters above the sea level.

CARE TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF VIRUS 

- Remove all mosquito breeding sites within the households, such as pots, vases and others. Also usually where it can be susceptible, colleges, schools, parks, workplace, among others. 

- Wash every week tanks and ponds where water is stored for domestic use. 

- Keep the terraces and yards clear of objects that can hold water such as tires, scrap metal, cleaning rain gutters, puddles, reservoirs of clean water among others. 

- Collect garbage and solid waste in vacant lots and keep the yard clean. 

- Participate in conferences gathering useless objects with community and intersectoral participation. 

It is important to note that this disease has no vaccine and treatment is usually given orally.
