Thousands of Palestinians fled the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, on the border with Egypt, after a ground incursion by the Israeli army.
The bodies of women, children and elderly appeared lying in the streets, while wandering the wounded screaming, ambulances were unable to reach all the victims and the city's main hospital was evacuated after being targeted by tank fire.
