The new system of giant rocket NASA overcame significant internal stage, but the first test launch was postponed to 2018, the agency said.
NASA is designing its Launch System to carry astronauts into space beyond the Earth's orbit to an asteroid and eventually to Mars. The rockets will be more powerful than the Saturn V system that sent astronauts to the moon in the Apollo capsule.
Agency managers gave the green light to proceed with program planning his first, smaller version of the rocket after it passed a crucial internal review. The smaller rockets would be capable of placing 77 tons in orbit crew and cargo. Larger rockets could carry 143 tons.
NASA said the construction of smaller rocket that cost more than seven billion dollars between 2014 and the time of release.
