Blast demolishes building on the outskirts of Paris, at least 2

A four-story building in a suburb of Paris on Sunday morning collapsed after an explosion, killing a child and an elderly woman, while rescuers searched through rubble for people still missing. 

About 150 rescuers worked with trained to try to find missing persons six dogs, said the prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis, Philippe Galli. 

An 8-year-old died in the collapse of the building and firefighters found unconscious in a 80 year old woman who died while being removed from the rubble, the Fire Department spokesman, said Gabriel Plus. 



Ten people, four of them seriously injured, were rescued from the rubble, he said. 

Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, told reporters at the scene that the blast took place at around 7 am local time (0500 GMT), and was apparently caused by a gas leak. 

"We should be careful, because there are ongoing investigations. Certainties No," he said. 

One side of the building in the suburb of Rosny-Sous-Bois was completely destroyed, exposing the interior of the apartments. Local authorities said that the structure itself seemed to have been constructed in accordance with current legislation. 

Local residents who came to help moments after the explosion described a bloody scene.

"We try to get people out," said Arafet Brahim, who said he and his friends took some children who seemed to be in good condition.
