At least nine people were killed on Tuesday and three were injured after they were attacked and killed while waiting for the delivery of a corpse in the morgue in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, the most violent in the impoverished Central American country.

The attack occurred in the early morning hours, when a group of armed and wearing face men opened fire on the family of a government contractor who had been killed on Monday, told Reuters the head of the National Security Force and Research (Fusina), Germán Alfaro.

"It's a typical organized crime gangs episode, we are thoroughly investigating this case and their motivations," added the official.

The dead included two bodyguards also the family of the contractor and two employees of a funeral.
