International Editorial, August 30 2014.- Recent studies have found, for example, the tomato sauce protects the heart and helps reduce crushed cholesterol. Now it could also become an effective weapon to prevent prostate cancer. New research from the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge Yoxford has determined that eating ten servings of tomatoes a week (fresh, crushed, creams, sauces, etc) reduces by 18 percent the risk of developing the most common form of cancer male. In reaching this conclusion, the researchers tracked the diet and lifestyle of 806 thousand men between 50 and 69 years with prostate cancer and compared with 12,005 free men of this disease.
The study, published in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, and funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), is the first of its kind that raises some dietary recommendations against prostate cancer, based on three elements: selenium, calcium and enlicopeno foods, an antioxidant that fights toxins that cause cell and DNA damage. Thus, men who maintained an optimal intake of these three components had a lower risk of developing this type of tumor. But it was the tomatoes and their derivatives with high in lycopene, which showed a greater benefit with a reduced risk of up to 18 percent.
"Our findings suggest that tomatoes may play an important role in the prevention of prostate cancer. Though more studies are needed to confirm these results, men should include in your diet a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight and be physically active, "says Vanessa Er, School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol and lead author of the study.
