The service, the agency said, is free and applies to units over 15 years, having plates in the Federal District.
The 120 workshops that give this service are those of the Integrated Pollutant Emission Reduction Program.
The Sedema PIEC said the workshops are guaranteed the supply of catalytic converters until December 31, 2014 to 160 thousand private vehicles over 15 years old can participate in the program at any time.
According to the agency, a catalytic converter converts toxic gases into non-toxic, through a chemical process that reduces emissions up to 80 times.
"The program is implemented in workshops Integral Program Pollutant Emission Reduction (PIREC), which are authorized by the Sedema to make catalytic converters change," said Environment.
"These workshops were selected for this program because they are the only ones with the capital's dependence authorization to install catalytic converters" he said.
Through this program, the authorities estimate reduce year over 18 thousand tons of emissions of hydrocarbons, 126,000 tons of carbon monoxide and five thousand tons of nitrogen oxides, which are ozone precursors.
