The award-winning director Guillermo del Toro is producing an animated film directed by Jorge Gutierrez, who joined him at Fox Studios to present scenes of the film, which should debut in October.
'Book of Life' is full of images of Mexican folklore, with particular emphasis on the Day of the Dead, the annual food and music that pays tribute to the spirits of deceased loved ones.
Del Toro said he was shocked by the emotional, visual and narrative Gutiérrez link with Mexico.
"It was a huge nostalgia," said Del Toro, "a painful and beautiful nostalgia that made me say that this project will protect and celebrate this man."
Gutierrez also helped that submit their ideas and illustrations in the middle "of a sea of tequila," said the filmmaker.
'Book of Life' focuses on two friends who try to approach the girl of his dreams, not realizing that further powers are interested in the result. The leaders of the underworlds, the Land of Land Remembered and Forgotten, make a bet on which of the two friends will choose the girl.
Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum and Diego Luna lend voices to the characters. The film also features rancheras interpretations of popular songs from Mumford & Sons, Radiohead, Rod Stewart and others. The outstanding composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who won an Oscar, musicalizó tape.
The focus of music and animation is also unique, said Del Toro. "It is charming and beautiful, nothing trite," he said.
