Advisable to visit the orthodontist at age seven

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that from the age of seven, all children must visit and undergo an examination with the orthodontist.

This, in order to detect any problem, as there are several disorders that can affect the teeth and jaws in childhood.

In this context, the specialist area of Orthodontics, Mayo Clinic, John Volz, said that contrary to the belief of visiting the orthodontist in adolescence for placement of braces from children such examination is necessary.
This allows to obtain baseline values of the teeth and jaws, as well as detect any problems in their early stages.

The purpose of orthodontics, he said, is to prevent, diagnose and treat any dental or facial irregularities, which in technical terms is "malocclusion," which means "bad bite."

In a statement, insisted that at about age seven, most children already have several permanent teeth in the upper and lower jaws, and once they start to leave, the orthodontist can evaluate the development of the bite in children and see if there are areas to worry about.

He said the first evaluation allows the specialist to see if the tooth eruption is misplaced, missing or too many teeth, and identify if there is any premature delayed eruption of permanent loss of baby teeth or.

The test also allows orthodontic check if the teeth are of normal size and if not, evaluate whether that merits attention, as is the case of too prominent upper teeth, which can be problematic because they pose greater risk of harm to a fall of the child.

Volz said that other problems are crowding or little space between the teeth, which may appear as they leave permanent.

Furthermore, examination may reveal the misalignment of the jaws as a result of an alteration in the growth of one or both, and provide the opportunity to discuss certain oral, such as finger sucking habits, thumb or clenching.

He also noted that in some children, speech problems begin to be developed as a result of certain dental problems or jaw, even at a young age, so it is important to identify and treat these problems as soon as possible, before more serious become .

Generally, orthodontic treatment in young children is not as complete as is often in adolescents or adults, because it only focuses on controlling the specific problems already identified, he said.
