At least 30 civilians were killed in attacks by Syrian Air Force against the city of Al Rakka, a stronghold of the terrorist Islamic State militia (EI) in the northeast of the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
Opposition activists mentioned the figure of 35 dead and 40 wounded, including women and children, told DPA.
According to the Syrian Observatory, only 25 people were killed when a fighter jet shot, apparently by mistake, a missile struck near a bakery. Twelve of the dead were civilians and combatants remains of EI. Another six militants were killed in attacks on a military training of the militia.
The organization, based in London, said the Syrian Air Force had launched attacks on Saturday eight objectives of EI in Al Rakka. Images broadcast on the Internet showed the damage caused. Furthermore, the electricity supply was cut in the city.
The Syrian Observatory also said some drones (unmanned aircraft) flew Al Rakka. United States had begun some time ago to send drones to Syrian airspace to gather information on the activities of EI.
Al Rakka is one of the main strongholds of EI. Two weeks ago, militants had taken near the military airport Al Tabka strategically important. Since then, the Syrian army has intensified its air strikes against jihadist objectives in the region.
Apparently, during the taking of Al Tabka airport, the rebels also seized some fighter jets. In a video posted today by the extremists on the Internet several planes appear. The images show some fighters EI walking on the ship. It is unclear whether the aircraft are still operating.
The Syrian Observatory had assured after taking the airport that the Syrian army had managed to put aside all combat aircraft. Tabka Airport was the last bastion of the Syrian regime in the province of Al Rakka.
The group that monitors the situation of human rights in Syria protests also reported today the inhabitants of Al Ashara fighters against EI, after several women and children were killed in air attacks on the city in recent weeks.
The protesters demanded that fighters EI stop hiding in residential areas. Then militants shot dead a man and hung his body on a cross as a warning to the people deposed their rebellion, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
