Free 45 UN peacekeepers kidnapped in Syria

The United Nations (UN) announced that 45 attached to its mission in the Golan Heights, kidnapped on 28 August, UN peacekeepers were released today in good condition. 

In a statement, the international body that settled peacekeepers were returned to the 80 position of the mission to which they were attached, the Force of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF, for its acronym in English). 


The release occurred Thursday at 14:30 am local time, after which the peacekeepers, originating in Fiji, will be driven to Camp Foar to receive necessary medical care. 

The abduction of peacekeepers was apparently executed by the Frente al-Nusra in the town of Al Qunaytirah, whereas on 28 August also restricted the movement troops UNDOF 81. 

Hostage-taking, it was not the first incident of this nature occurred UNDOF troops, occurred during a period of intense fighting between rebel groups and the armed forces of Syria. 

Effective UNDOF, a unit created in 1974 in order to monitor compliance with the peace agreements between Israel and Syria, had been arrested by armed groups in the past, in March and May 2013, to be released later healthy and sound.
