A fight broke out on Sunday in the city of Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine, despite a request from the pro-Russian rebel there for a ceasefire to avoid a "humanitarian catastrophe."
One person died and 10 were injured in the shelling, which began Sunday morning and continued through the day council spokesman Maxim Rovinsky city, told The Associated Press.
The conditions are clearly deteriorated in Donetsk, the biggest rebel stronghold in eastern Ukraine. Journalists from The Associated Press 25 loud explosions heard in as many minutes around noon.
Over 10 residential buildings and a hospital and shop, badly damaged by shelling and several night bus caught between two fires were still burning Sunday morning.
At least 300,000 to one million residents have fled Donetsk with increasing violence between government forces and separatist pro-Russian Ukrainians, claiming the lives of more than 1,300 people since April, according to the UN.
"This is a real war.'s Impossible to live in this city.'ve Been sleeping in the basement for a week," said Inna Drobyshevskaya, a lawyer of 48 years old, in Donetsk.
"I do not want a Novorossiya (New Russia) for this price," he added, referring to a term used by the rebels to describe parts of eastern Ukraine seeking independence from the central government in Kiev.
On Saturday, rebel leader Aleksandr Zakharchenko called for a ceasefire, but his request was received with suspicion by both the government of Ukraine in Kiev as the West, whose leaders expressed concern that the measure only look up international pressure on Ukraine to allow entry of a Russian aid mission.
West argues that the mission of Russian aid could serve as a pretext for Russian soldiers entering Ukraine. He said that 20,000 of them have congregated near Russia's border with Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, and Western leaders have repeatedly accused Russia of supplying weapons to the rebels and military knowledge, which Russia denies.
