The humanitarian cease-fire 72 hours agreed between Israel and Hamas a couple of hours after onset broke, with renewed fighting in the Gaza Strip and rocket fire into Israel.
The ceasefire reached with mediation of the United States and the United Nations came into effect at 08:00 local time (0500 GMT), but returned two hours later to report violent incidents.
Fighting in the southern Gaza Strip resumed around 10:00 am, after a tank fired artillery fire in Rafah, while Hamas fighters continued to fire rockets into Jewish territory.
At least 40 people were killed in the Israeli bombardment of southern Gaza, according to the local hospital in Rafah.
Hamas claimed that Israel broke the agreement with the heavy artillery fire in the south of Gaza. "The enemy has not done his part and so we have the right to respond," denounced the Palestinian organization leader, Musa Abu Marzouk.
Shortly after noon on Friday, gave Israel canceled the ceasefire agreement, according to Israeli sources quoted by local daily Haaretz.
Israel Radio reported that more than 15 rockets and mortars were fired at Israel since fighting resumed and seven rockets were successfully intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
The Israeli army on Friday asked the residents of Gaza, through a recorded telephone message, stay in doors because it would resume operations in the Palestinian territory.
According to unconfirmed by government authorities in Tel Aviv, one Israeli soldier have been captured by Palestinian militants, which the upsurge in fighting is explained versions.
"The incident (abduction) is ongoing, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is in the middle of the operational and intelligence efforts to locate the soldier," a spokesman for the Israeli army.
