Google Street View technology moves to the oceans

The 360 degree views of coral reefs and marine life will be used to raise awareness about the conservation of these areas.
It is easy to connect to internet and get a 360 almost many streets in the world. Scientists hope that soon people can do the same with coral reefs and other underwater wonders. It will be like diving from the computer.

US government scientists are learning to use specialized wide-angle lenses in the Florida Keys this week with the hope of applying the type mapping "Street View" Google research and management of national marine sanctuaries.
Some of the images will be available online this week, including a selection in Google Maps, to give people the opportunity to take a look at the ecosystems that are still difficult and expensive to explore for long.

Some 400,000 images have been produced so far reef Australia and the Caribbean, but this is the first time the technology is used in American waters.

The images illustrate the success or failure of the coral restoration. They will also help scientists study the effects of rising ocean temperatures, pollution and hurricanes on reefs, officials said.

"This allows people who can not dive to understand what we want to create a special area of conservation," said Mitchell Tartt, division director of conservation science for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries of the National Administration for the Oceans and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The SVII triple lens cameras use the same technology used to produce the images of Google Street View of the streets, but instead of going placed on the roof of a car, the rig is operated by divers using small engines. Smaller versions mounted on tripods are being tested in the Keys this week.

The costs of the cameras and training six NOAA officials are paid as part of a partnership with Catlin Seaview Survey, funded by the insurer Catlin. Google is also a sponsor.
