At least 381 people died and nearly 2,000 were injured because of a strong earthquake that struck yesterday the mountainous Chinese province of Yunnan in the southwest of the country, knocking down homes and desencandenando a massive rescue operation.
The figures were updated last night by the Chinese state news agency, Xinhua, quoting rescuers.
The earthquake in Zhaotong prefecture brought down buildings and forcing residents and rescue teams to pull survivors from the rubble, as they showed pictures of social media. The number of wounded over a thousand people, official sources said.
The earthquake, measuring 6.5 according to the Chinese seismographic center, originated about 1630 hours (local). The epicenter was in the village of Longtousha in Ludian district, near the city of Zhaotong. The district has a population of 430,000 people.
In Ludian cut the power supply and the oldest houses collapsed. Local authorities estimate that the quake destroyed 12,000 homes, and 30,000 were damaged.
