The South Korean government said today that North Korea does not have the "rainbow bomb" after considering the possibility that the regime of Kim Jong-un is already developing this dangerous nuclear weapon of mass attack, capable of destroying electronic devices and paralyze a country.
"North Korea has not yet reached the level to develop these pumps because their development requires advanced technological skills level," said a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Seoul as saying by the local agency Yonhap.
The spokesman added that "if Pyongyang is confirmed acquired technology" for future attacks by electromagnetic pulse (EMP by its acronym in English), but he said, "we believe it has not been successful" when making these explosives capable of cripple an entire country.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry statements come after last Tuesday the former director of the CIA James Woolsey claimed that North Korea "will soon reach Russia and China when it comes to make the main ingredients for an EMP attack."
The "rainbow bomb" which until now has never been used in combat, a nuclear explosive is ready to be detonated at high altitude and against which there is no possible defense for the moment.
The blast, which requires a rocket capable of flying at over 300 miles high and medium-sized nuclear bomb would generate on the surface of a large electromagnetic field thousands of miles which would be totally or partially destroyed all electronic devices .
An attack of this kind would have devastating consequences for any modern country, and it would cut electricity, water, communications and distribution of food and commodities.
Experts believe that North Korea has dedicated numerous efforts over the years to make this dangerous weapon.
Although the regime of Kim Jong-un has never made direct reference to EMP bombs in recent years has claimed the development of nuclear weapons as a mainstay of its defense policy, despite criticism from the international community.
North Korea is able to detonate nuclear devices-and has conducted three trials in 2006, 2009 and 2013- although experts doubt whether the communist state has reached the decision to install nuclear warheads on its missiles of short and medium range technological level. EFE
