'No one did anything' to avoid tragedy in mine Timbiquí

A troubled day Timbiquí dwellers lived, on the Pacific coast town Cauca after emergence recorded in a open pit mine, where seven people were killed and nine others were injured by falling on them mud and stone. 

The situation arose about noon on Wednesday in the gold mine El Pital, district of Collate, which is reached by river from the main town. 

Once they reached the area, relief agencies confirmed that there was 17 trapped miners, as originally reported for mayor, but seven. However, more than six hours were needed to recover the bodies, escaped underground. 

"The landslide occurred in one of the tunnels of the gold mine trapped and left seven people whose bodies were recovered," said Germán Callejas, coordinator (e.) ​​Departmental Risk Management Council of Cauca. 

The fatalities were identified as Elmer Garcia Angulo, Angulo Olmeido Elias Navarrete Valencia, Kennedy Hines Garcés, Luis Ramos Gomez, Orley Eider Angulo Herrera Hines and Joy.



The nine injured, including the owner engage, are served by multiple injuries in the hospital in the coastal town. 

For residents of Timbiquí, it is an announced emergency for several days because they had noticed that the ground was weak, but "nobody did anything." 

Testimonials from people who know the land, located about an hour by boat from the municipal seat of Timbiquí, also pointed to the gold open pit would have given because, for 15 years, extracted unchecked from the bowels of land the precious metal. 


Meanwhile, Mayor Victor Sinisterra Amu said the emergency caused by the slip reflects a very serious situation that afflicts their town and it's a similar situation to the last May was presented at the open pit mine Clean Water in the municipality of Santander de Cauca Quilichao, so you need to work on prevention. 

In this area, the local leader said, still with backhoes work in the field, so that the earth gave way and caused the unfortunate event. 

"It's overwhelming anguish of the community to see many people disappear in a moment," insisted Sinisterra. 

The president said he hoped the department level helps to overcome this emergency. "We ask so much support to address this situation, because we could not handle this," he concluded.
