Health detects first case of chikungunya

 Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion reported that it has detected a virus chikungunya imported case in Mexico. 

Although no further details on the status of the infected person, the official explained that 87 imported cases are registered in the Central American region. 

"We have one confirmed case, the person was in Antigua and Barbuda and arrived with symptoms," he said in an interview with Radio Formula. 



"It's a disease called chikungunya, is transmitted by the mosquito that transmits dengue is viral, treatment is symptomatic, is less lethal than dengue, but it is very uncomfortable and there is no specific antiviral for treatment," explained . 

Kuri said the surveillance system of the country has the capacity to make a differential diagnosis between dengue and chikungunya. 

He warned that the mosquito is in Mexico, but has not been found to be a carrier of the virus. 

"It's going to arrive, it is a matter of time, but we are prepared to detect," he said. 

The keys of the disease 

  • - Chikungunya is a virus transmitted to humans by mosquitoes thereof involved in the transmission of dengue (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). 

  • - The clinical picture is characterized by fever and severe joint pains, muscle aches, headaches, nausea, fatigue and rash. 

  • - Rarely causes death, but the pain can last for months or years, it may even lead to disability. 

  • - The disease may occur between three and seven days after the bite of the infected mosquito. 

  • - There are no specific medications to treat this disease. Treatment is primarily aimed at relieving symptoms. 

  • - Some clinical signs of this disease are similar to those of dengue, with which it can be confused in areas where it is prevalent. 

  • - A major risk factor is the proximity of housing to breeding sites of mosquitoes.
