
The quake occurred at 11.53 local time (20.53 GMT) on Monday and its epicenter was located 24 kilometers southeast of the remote island of Sitkin and 114 kilometers deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The initial strong quake triggered a tsunami warning issued by the Tsunami Warning Center Pacific (PTWC).
Shortly after the alert is delivered, the people of Adak, Alaska, went to higher ground and away from the coast, for fear of flooding accompanied by strong currents.
