China's seismological authority warned of possible aftershocks after the earthquake of 6.5 degrees on the Richter scale occurred on Sunday in Yunnan Province, southwest of China.
The quake zone would experience aftershocks between 5 and 6 magnitude in the coming days, said Pan Huaiwen, director of the China Earthquake Networks (CENC, for its acronym in English), in an interview online at www .china.com.cn.
"It does not mean that these replicas will happen, but we can not rule out the possibility," Pan said.
The official suggested that rescuers and residents of the affected areas be alert and prepared for aftershocks.
